Bringing out the best in Des Moines youth: Project Bridging

A Des Moines substitute teacher runs Bridging At Risk Youth Programs to help young girls with life skills and academics.

Project Bridging equips teens from underserved communities with the tools and support they need to reach their full potential. Through engaging experiences using limited resources, Project Bridging fosters positive relationships, self-discovery and a commitment to helping Des Moines youth build a brighter future.

Its executive director, Patricia Barbee, a substitute teacher, is the latest Inside Black Iowa podcast guest. Her mentees said she brings out "a whole other side" of them.

"I get her in multiple ways, and she gets me in multiple ways," said Keymonie Mason, a 7th grader at McCombs Middle School.

"It helps us grow as a person," said Edith Gonzalez, a 9th grader at Lincoln High School.
